A Surprise for Godfrey

Godfrey Outram, a long standing member of Cheltenham Camera Club, settled in his chair to enjoy the evening’s lecture.
After five minutes the lecturer asked Godfrey to come forward and assist for a moment. As he did so Club Chairman Ian Gee appeared from behind a screen and announced that there was a change of programme — the evening was to be a tribute evening to Godfrey Outram to celebrate his fifty years of membership.
Ian then introduced from behind the screen, a number of guests including members from other camera clubs and photographic societies in Gloucestershire and the West Midlands, including the man who had introduced Godfrey to the club fifty years ago, Jerry Samuel of Langdale Road
Jerry had been a colleague at GCHQ in the 1950s when Godfrey was a newcomer to Cheltenham following his National Service in the Intelligence Corps
During his fifty years in the Club Godfrey has held most of the offices including two periods as chairman. He has also won many awards in club competitions and exhibitions.
As guest followed guest in telling anecdotes about Godfrey, he was amazed that it had all been arranged without his knowledge. His wife, also of fifty years, Wendy, had connived with Chairman Ian Gee to provide information and photographs.
Following the presentation a cake was carried in bearing Godfrey’s portrait and the couple were also presented with a framed portrait of themselves by Ian Gee.
Appropriately, a group photograph was then taken for the clubs archives, and all then drank a toast to Godfrey and Wendy.
“I am still in a state of shock” said Godfrey, “I am proud to have been thought worthy of such an event, and memories of it should be with me for a long time. The evening brought back many memories and gave me the chance to see so many friendly faces from outside as well as inside our club.”

PhotoStroud - Festival of Photography 2007

Over the years the market town of Stroud, in the southern part of Gloucestershire, has attracted and become home to a large number of artists who draw inspiration from the landscape and from the remarkably vibrant community within it.
Significant numbers of photographers have been making consistently high quality work in the Stroud Valleys whilst keeping in touch with developments in photography both nationally and internationally.
Until now, however, the work of these Stroud based photographers has not been gathered together and shown. Our aim is to bring this work to the audience it deserves and show it alongside events which will celebrate the best of photography worldwide.
The results can be seen between Monday 15th and Saturday 27th October.
