Chairman Snaps His Predecessors

For his Chairman's Evening presentation Ian Gee demonstrated the use of studio flash lighting for portraiture, explaining the use of alternative reflectors, umbrellas and softboxes for different purposes.

He also demonstrated the basics of posing people in order to flatter them.

The conclusion of the presentation was a group photograph and he used former chairmen as his models. The group was lit with two lamps, a 20 inch softbox above the camera to provide even flat 'ambient' lighting across the group, and a silver umbrella at the left hand side. A silver umbrella produces a 'hotspot' and this is directed towards the right hand side of the group; the people nearest the umbrella are lit only by its periphery so the overall lighting is remarkably even while still producing modelling. No adjustment has been necessary before printing.

Finally Ian joined the group himself posing with his Gandolfi 4x5 inch plate camera and red/black focussing cloth without which it was impossible to use such a camera.

Exhibition Opens

The Mayor of Cheltenham Councillor Mrs Jacky Fletcher opened the camera Club's annual exhibition on Saturday 10th at the Pittville Pump Room and commented favourably on many of the pictures as she toured the display with chairman Ian Gee. While her opinion of some of the pictures frequently differed from the judge's, she thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition.

She then opened the show, firstly presenting the prizes to the primary and secondary school children who had won awards in the Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year competition. She spoke in turn to all the children who came up and congratulated them.

During his opening speech Ian Gee was applauded when he said it was the duty of the Council to support voluntary organisations by providing buildings they could use, like the Pump Room. He said there were many rumours that the Council would be disposing of it to a commercial concern next year.

Responding the Mayor said the Council "will not be disposing of the family silver" but was unable to elaborate. She said the same stories had proliferated fifty years ago but we still have the use of it.

The Exhibition Secretary confirmed that the rooms have been provisionally booked for next year.

At the close of the proceedings the Chairman thanked the Mayor and through her the Borough Council and presented her with a framed portrait of her he taken previously.

Camera Club Joins the Debate

One hundred and forty two year old Cheltenham Camera Club, the seventh oldest in the country which holds its annual exhbition in the Pitville Pump Room has sent a petition to the Council signed by its members requesting that arts organisations be allowed to continue to use the premises in future.

This year's exhibition will be opened there on Saturday 10th February by the Mayor but thereafter, owing to uncertainty about the future of the Pump Room, the Club feels this may be the last.

"We used to be permitted to display our work in the Art Gallery and Museum" said Club Chairman Ian Gee of Charlton Kings, "but the powers that be decided that local work like ours was no longer appropriate in the town's art gallery. Fortunately they were able to suggest the Pump Rooms, and indeed welcomed us there so much as an added attraction for the buildings, that they doubled our stay to four weeks. Reading the latest plans for the Museum - 'Exhibiting the work of more top artists' would appear to suggest there is no chance of ever going back there if the Pump Room is no longer available.

"In addition to showing our own work we run concurrently the Gloucestershire Young Photographer of the Year Competition, open to all schools in the county, and display the work of as many of the entrants as we have room for. This is acknowledged by numerous authorities as a valuable contribution to the youth of today who have taken up digital photography with enthusiasm. It will be a pity if we are no longer able to hold this competition."

During this evening's meeting, Club members were invited to sign the following petition:

We, the undersigned members of Cheltenham Camera Club are dismayed and saddened to hear of the plans that the council are currently considering.
After the last war it was the people and industries of Cheltenham who paid for it to be returned to its former glory. Therefore we consider that it should be kept in good order for the people of Cheltenham to enjoy as they have until now.

Cheltenham residents are justifiably proud of this town gem and look to those who were elected to protect their interests, to do so with the same pride, ensuring it is kept available for use by all organisations present and future.Cheltenham Camera Club are proud to have staged our Annual Exhibition there in recent years.

Jack Stevens being presented with a certificate by Bernard Barton-Ancliffe, to mark 50 years membership of Cheltenham Camera Club

Jack Stephens - Celebrating 50 years

An unusual event took place at Cheltenham Camera Club's weekly meeting this week.

Mr Jack Stephens achieved a membership of the Club spanning a period of fifty years. To mark this somewhat unique occasion and celebrate the moment, Jack was awarded with a certificate and bottle Champaign by the vice-chairman Bernard Barton-Ancliffe.

Fifty years ago, Jack then working at Smiths Industries, was persuaded by Tony Nightingale, to join the Club who met at the Motor Club in London Road at that time. Jack remembers that successive moves over the years took him to the YMCA, Suffolk Square and now Holy Apostles Hall.

Fortunately Jack took his love of Photography beyond the Cheltenham Club and became instrumental in the resurgence of Tewkesbury Camera Club becoming its Honorary President. He will be fondly remembered by ex TCC members for his ready advice on printing, audio visuals and his efforts to keep the TCC alive and active.

Cheltenham Camera Club acknowledges with thanks his support and dedication over this very significant period and wishes Jack many more 'Snapping' years.
